Prado Museum skip the line: best time and day
The best time is at opening (10:00-11:00) or mid-afternoon; avoid the free 18:00-20:00 slot and the free-admission days. Best days: Tuesday to Thursday. A skip-the-line ticket (from €18) or a guided tour gives you priority access and saves you the queue.

Best time to visit the Prado
The museum is quietest at two points in the day:
- Right at opening (10:00-11:00): the best moment. You arrive ahead of most people and can see Las Meninas with hardly anyone in front of it.
- Mid-afternoon (from 15:00-16:00): the flow of groups eases and the light in the central gallery is lovely.
- Avoid the free slot (18:00-20:00): this is when the most visitors gather and the longest box-office queues form.
Best day of the week
To dodge the crowds, plan your visit for Tuesday to Thursday. Weekends and public holidays are the busiest days, and it's also worth avoiding the free-admission days, when the museum fills up. If you can only go at the weekend, go first thing and bring your ticket already booked.
| Best moment | Tuesday to Thursday, at opening (10:00-11:00) |
|---|---|
| Good option | Mid-afternoon on weekdays (15:00-17:00) |
| To avoid | Free slot 18:00-20:00 · free days · weekend midday |

How to avoid the queue
Choosing the right time reduces the wait, but the surest way to skip the queue is to have your ticket already bought. With the skip-the-line ticket (from €18) you go straight in with your booking; with the guided tour (from €43.50) the ticket is included and you get priority access with a guide. Either way you save yourself the box-office queue, which is especially long in high season.
Prefer to go with a guide?
The guided tour includes the ticket, skips the line and takes you straight to the essentials.
Book guided tour →When to go and how to avoid the queues
We have tried the Prado at different times and on different days to see what works. Here is what we would repeat and what we would avoid.
- The first hour is the best. Right at opening (10:00) the rooms are almost empty; within an hour the pace changes completely.
- Tuesday to Thursday. Midweek is far quieter than weekends, public holidays or the eve of a long weekend.
- Avoid the free time slot (6–8 pm) and the free days. Entry is free but the queue is long and the rooms get crowded; it is not the best way to enjoy the museum.
- With a skip-the-line ticket you use priority access. Having your booking ready avoids the box-office queue, which is the biggest time sink in high season.
