Room-by-room itinerary (2 hours)

This route follows a logical path through the first floor of the Villanueva Building, where the great works are concentrated. Check the Prado floor plan to find your way:

  1. Las Meninas by Velázquez (Room 012): start with the museum's masterpiece. Give it time: composition, perspective and the puzzles it hides. More in the Las Meninas guide.
  2. The Surrender of Breda and Velázquez's portraits: in the adjacent rooms, don't miss "The Lances" and the equestrian court portraits.
  3. Goya's Black Paintings: among them Saturn Devouring His Son, the most disturbing and modern set in the museum.
  4. The Clothed Maja, The Nude Maja and The Third of May 1808 by Goya: the luminous and the most dramatic sides of the Aragonese genius.
  5. Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights (Room 056A): the most enigmatic Flemish triptych, full of symbolism. More in the Bosch guide.
  6. Rubens' Three Graces: finish with the jewel of Flemish Baroque, of singular harmony and sensuality.

Round off the route with a couple of works by El Greco and Titian if you have time. You'll see the Prado masterpieces without wearing yourself out.

Express 1-hour version

If you only have one hour, cut the route down to the must-sees and keep a brisk pace:

Velázquez and Goya are relatively close on the first floor, so you'll save time by grouping those rooms before heading down to see Bosch.
