What to do in Madrid when it rains: the Art Triangle museums

When it rains or turns cold in Madrid, the Art Triangle museums are the best plan: the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen are minutes apart on foot. The Paseo del Arte Card lets you visit all three at a discount. In winter there are fewer queues than in high season.

The Art Triangle: three museums a step apart

Madrid's so-called Paseo del Arte brings together the city's three great galleries within less than a kilometre along the Paseo del Prado. It is the perfect indoor plan for a rainy day: you can walk from one museum to the next in just a few minutes, barely getting wet.

If you love 20th-century art, the Reina Sofía is the must-see stop: it houses Picasso's Guernica. And to understand how they differ, our comparison of the Prado and the Reina Sofía will help.

Paseo del Arte Card: three museums at a discount

If you plan to visit more than one museum, the Paseo del Arte Card gives access to the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen at a discount versus buying the tickets separately. It does not expire on the day: spread your visits however you like.

The Prado: the indoor plan par excellence

If you only have time for one museum, make it the Prado. It is spacious, heated and worth several hours between Las Meninas, Goya's Black Paintings and Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. A rainy day is, in fact, one of the best times to visit: it feels like a complete cultural refuge.

To avoid queuing outside in the rain, book a timed ticket online. See also our Prado in 2 hours guide if you want to make the most of your visit.

Winter in Madrid: fewer queues, more calm

A rarely mentioned advantage of visiting Madrid in winter is that, outside bank-holiday weekends and Christmas, there are far fewer tourists than in spring and summer. Queues at the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen are shorter and the galleries less crowded. Even so, booking online is still recommended to secure your entry and time.
